Tablet 2-in-1 swivel soundlogic xt android Review

8 Mar

Summary as of August 6, 2014: Simple. Avoid this tablet. See updates at the bottom of this review.

I had my eye on a convertable android laptop on Ebay. To my dismay I couldn’t find any information on it. No reviews, no customer comments, no hands on video, nothing. I took a chance on buying the tablet, if for no other reason than to write a review. I’ve never written a review before so bear with me.

SD card slot
Microphone
Headphone

Dc jack

I had an Acer 10 inch tablet and never left home with it because it was too big, this I can leave home with. Upon taking it out of the box I get instant impressions, cheap plastic, not upgradeable. I had to test its swivel hinge before anything else, it resisted converting into tablet mode, but not enough to concern me. The screen orientation must be changed manually. There are no sensors other than touch. I have yet to come across an Android device that does everything I want without adding apps. Time to customize… no google marketplace. It does have 2 other markets, thats something to work with, but I spent hundreds with Google and wanted my apps. No bluetooth to receive apps either. I’m a techie and I now have my Google Marketplace apps without the marketplace. It involved a micro sd card, sd adapter,a backup from my android phone to micro sd (see entry titled “Android Trick in 8 Steps”). I also did it from dropbox, but had to get dropbox on the device first. Charging from 15% to full battery took what felt like forever. By morning I discovered that it never turns off. Right out of the box some settings needed adjusting. No big deal. This thing charged all night. It’s 1.5 hrs after unplugging it and a half hour of use, half the battery icon is gone. It has a picture viewer but no camera, at least you can view pics from your sd card or usb storage. It’s screen is both capacitive and resistive, it does pinch to zoom which impressed me. It has an unimpressive voice recorder, but to be honest due to no camera and a mic jack, I was surprised that it has a microphone somewhere. I dont know where the mic is and yes, I looked for it, but the speakers are on the bottom which is the most idiotic place to put them. I suspect the hole on the bottom under another hole labeled “reset” is the microphone and that would explain the difficulty receiving sound. I’m impressed with the video player, it shows thumbnails of the videos and even plays .flv and .mov formats. Take note that the sd card goes in upside down, put it in wrong like me and you’ll have a hard time pulling it out. It has a file viewer and document viewer. I was impressed by that because the Acer Iconia has neither out of the box. There is no hardware for adjusting the volume. The volume and screen orientation icons are on the taskbar at the top of the screen along with another impressive feature, an icon for screen shots. My other devices can’t take screenshots. I may keep the device just for screenshots. I haven’t been able to get Netflix to play anything, but Crunchyroll plays smoothly. Youtube plays fine as well, but only from the Youtube app. The device claims to have 4GB storage and it does, just that its reserved most of it for itself, leaving 1.77GB for the user. That’s not a problem for me because I use a 16GB micro sd card with adapter. The mouse pad is very responsive. The flatness of the keyboard keys is annoying and makes it difficult to type. Dont get any ideas about touch typing with the onscreen keyboard either. Although the tablet is both capacitive and resistive, the resistive is dominant and compacitive requires a firm touch. I have preferred resistive screens because they allow me to use my fingernail and write with a pointed stylus like a pen, but capacitive is better for webpages and people without fingernails, with this device I dont have to choose. I am a mixture of disappointed and impressed by this device. Knowing what I know now I’m not sure what my purchasing decision would have been.

Update: Knowing what I know now I can’t recommend this tablet. I’m still impressed with it’s features, but it is very susceptible to being defective. My tablet was perfect until I charged it overnight and tried using it the next morning. I don’t remember which defect occurred first, but there were 2 issues. It could not detect any wireless networks and it dramatically lost calibration. Recalibrating was simple, but I could not resolve the wifi issue. I returned it to the Ebay seller for a refund. I then added more money to my refund and purchased a Asus Transformer Prime tablet, (My Prime was stolen and I replaced it with the Asus Transformer TF300). What I now feel is a good choice is for people with $125 or less to spend on a tablet is to go into any department store and get a touchscreen tablet with Android 4.0 and very likely a faster processor. I feel that ANY tablet would have less defects and the most important thing is that it works. If you need a keyboard then you can always get a bluetooth one.

For anyone with a tablet without Google Marketplace, see post titled “Android Trick in 8 Steps”. I have it all figured out, but it’s a secret. Shhhh…

Update#2:

I am no longer the slightest bit impreseed with this tablet. (Why is it still being sold?) Tablets have gotten better since this review and this may just be the worst tablet currently still being sold. It should be avoided at all costs. If you get it for free, give it back. There are much better tablets for as low as $69. Even the $30 prepaid Android phone I got for my kids is better than this tablet.  If you really need a keyboard you can invest in a bluetooth keyboard as 90-95% of tablets sold in the U.S. have Bluetooth. My android tv device that I purchased in a local department store doesn’t have bluetooth, it’s disappointing, but it has 2 usb ports for keyboard, mouse, or external storage. Still, I was surprised at the lack of Bluetooth on an Android. My current Android tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and that I DO recommend.

What is the website for Soundlogic? I keep getting diffrent links, but no luck with a direct link.. I’m trying to trouble shoot an issue and unable to locate it on the web.

    • tltshay September 16, 2012 at 1:35 pm #

I dont think there is a website for this android netbook and I did search. It’s likely made by some another large manufacturer that wishes to remain anonymous. When I purchased the tablet there were no reviews but now there are many reviews and people troubleshooting the tablet. You may find help from one of them. What is your issue?

      • Maurice September 16, 2012 at 7:40 pm #

I perform a factory reset (I wanna sell my 2 in 1 tablet) now that I resetted it I keep getting “tap to calibrate” screen.. I Gave up after 3 minutes of tapping.. I do believe it’s an internal issue.

      • tltshay September 16, 2012 at 9:46 pm #

I had a complication with calibration on my tablet as well. Some of the calibration targets wouldn’t respond unless I turned the tablet in a different orientation and it’s always better to use a stylus to hit the exact center of each target. I was able to get mine calibrated each time I reset it. I was troubleshooting the wifi connectivity.

I just bout a soundlogic xt but the touch screen doesn’t respond to anything how can I fix it!?
Do I have to set it up manually for it to work?

    • tltshay November 4, 2012 at 4:41 pm #

The device should have asked to calibrated when turned on for the first time. That is unless you got it used and the last user didn’t have the courtesy to do a factory reset. All old versions of Android ask for calibration upon the first startup.

      • Justin November 9, 2012 at 2:01 pm #

What steps do you take to do a factory reset? I’ve tried inserting a pin in the reset slot but it doesn’t seem to actually wipe the device, I still get the custom background when I start it up.

      • tltshay November 13, 2012 at 11:09 am #

You go into settings, usually factory reset is under “Security”. You should wipe the device, you don’t need to worry about the sd card. If I have an sd card in it I usually remove it beforehand, I don’t trust technology, I’ve seen it do things WRONG. SD card usually refers to the internal memory on the device, sometimes I go ahead and wipe that if I had apps installed there.

Thanks tltshay – unfortunately I don’t have that access. My friend’s daughter set a lock pattern and can’t remember it now. Ouch! Any suggestions? It starts up in a locked state immediately so I can’t get anywhere.

      • tltshay November 16, 2012 at 10:29 pm #

Pressing a reset button would only restart it. You could try holding the reset button for 20 seconds which will wipe some devices to a factory state.

    • tltshay November 4, 2012 at 4:46 pm #

Maybe I was so shocked at your immediate problem that I didn’t answer your question. 😛
You should go into settings and try calibrating the screen manually. If that doesn’t work then report the defect to the seller and request a refund or replacement. There’s no reason to do extensive troubleshooting on a device you just purchased, unless you can’t find the seller.

Does it come with itunes like a regular laptop so i am able to update my ipod by plugging it in to the computer?

    • tltshay November 13, 2012 at 11:15 am #

This isn’t a laptop, it’s an android tablet. I think you must be thinking of a netbook. Android devices don’t come with itunes, there ARE at least 2 awesome apps on the marketplace that sync with Itunes just like your Ipod or Ipad such as DoubleTwist for example. This Android tablet doesn’t have the Google marketplace, it has some other market and since I don’t have this device anymore I can’t say if the itunes apps are in that market.

i cannot calibrate at all does it 3 or 4 times then goes back to screen, caanot connect to the internet the wifi keeps saying scanning or gets disconnected, the usb ports dont work either

    • tltshay November 13, 2012 at 11:19 am #

Wow. That is too many things to go wrong. You should try to get service under your warranty as soon as possible. Maurice was kind enough to track down the manufacturer and supply the information to us:

Hi, I bought 3 of these for my kids thinking they would be good starters for learning to type, etc. So far, 2 of the three will not connect to the Wi-Fi even though they are less than 10 feet from the apparatus. I set up a password on another one and now I can’t get it unlocked. I am sure that I am entering the same password, have tried entering it numerous times to get it to reset, have hit the reset button on the back with no luck, tried holding the powerbutton and the home button at the same time but nothing is working. I tried calling the numbers listed in previous entries, was hung up on several times and finally left a message on some unknown persons voicemail… Help?

    • tltshay December 27, 2012 at 11:47 am #

Where did you buy the tablets from? Most stores and sellers have some sort of short term warranty. Once the wifi had quit on mine I couldn’t get it working. It couldn’t find any wireless networks at all and I returned it to the ebay seller for a refund. On most phones the factory reset is done by holding the power and volume button. I’d try holding the reset button down for 20 seconds. If something doesn’t work on Android, I always try a factory reset after I backup my data.

I have been browsing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never
found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me.
In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the web will be a lot more useful than ever before.

Thank you for your comment. This was a handy tablet for me for all of one day. I loved it until morning came and it could not detect a wifi signal and then it lost calibration. I sent mine back to the Ebay seller. At the time I thought the device deserved another chance, but I no longer feel this way. If you walk into just about any department store you can get an Android 4.0 device with a faster processor for less than this device costs. They don’t have the full usb ports, probably can’t take screenshots, and don’t have a keyboard, but I bet they work more than a day and you can always buy a bluetooth keyboard and case. I cannot recommend this tablet, I love it’s swivel, keyboard, usb ports, and screenshot ability, but can’t recommend it.

I cannot get past the android_ screen I’ve pushed the reset button on the bottom several times, even held it down 20 seconds, soon as I put the pin in the reset home the screen goes black & I have to turn it back on…. This is THE WORST ELECTRONIC DEVICE I HAVE EVER OWNED, can someone give me advice how to get the stupid thing past this screen

  8. Azure Hickman January 2, 2013 at 3:22 am #

Hi I received my tablet for christmas and it was working fine until tonight. I had in the tablet form and heard a high pitch noise and then the screen went black and powered off. When I turned it back on the screen is struck on the black screen with the white letters that say Android. There is no reset button, although at the bottom it says reset. Help how do I fix this?

    • tltshay January 2, 2013 at 4:43 am #

Try holding the reset button for 20 seconds. If that doesn’t work, then since it’s a gift, you should be able to put it back in the box and return it without a receipt. I don’t know how long stores allow gift returns so you should try returning it as soon as possible.

      • Azure January 2, 2013 at 4:45 am #

        Where is the reset button?

      • tltshay January 2, 2013 at 5:04 am #

I don’t have my swivel tablet anymore, but in my review I stated that the reset button is at the bottom of the device. Look at the bottom carefully and you should discover it.

      • Azure January 2, 2013 at 6:17 am #

All I have is two holes under the word RESET, not an actual button

    • tltshay January 2, 2013 at 10:05 am #

The hole is a reset. You have to straighten a paperclip and insert it into the reset hole. Probably the one closest to the word “reset”. My guess is that the other is a microphone .

I had to return my tablet the day after this review and didn’t update the review because I thought I was the only unlucky one, I actually thought about buying the tablet again. I’d actually like to know if anyone has a working tablet and is happy with it. This is a nice tablet if you can get one that works for under $125. 😀

Tablets don’t last long anyway. Some not even a year but this one is the worst ever. If you get a used one that hasn’t been reset I warn you DO NOT RESET IT. it will never work again. My son never even got to use it. Hunk of junk.
